A friend has requested a black silk scarf. After some thought, I suggested the starburst shawl pattern on p56 of the wonderful “Twill thrills” book; he liked the idea, so I began the planning.
The pattern draft is quite large as it is for a shawl. In the book there is a threading for each section of the pattern and written instructions on how to use each pattern section in the actual threading and treadling. I entered the pattern sections into WeaveIT and, following the written pattern directions, created the pattern draft and then adapted this for use as a scarf.
A single threading repeat (398 ends) will be about 40cm on loom. The piece will be woven TAW.
Warp and weft yarn – Black 20/2 silk
Total ends – 401 (398 in pattern + 1 for symmetry + 2 for floating selvedges)
Wind warp with 5 ends in hand (80 wraps of mill + a single end)
Warp length – 5.5m (2 scarves + sampling + shrinkage + loom loss)
On loom dimensions – approx 40cm x 200cm (about 5 treadling pattern repeats)
EPI & PPI – 25
Spread raddle at 5 ends per slot
Reed – 10dpi
Sley reed – 2,3 ends per dent
I began by winding 2 skeins of 20/2 black silk yarn into 4 balls; I now have 5 balls and so am ready to begin winding the warp.
