Warp 43 – Photo 51 – Sample completed

This afternoon, I wove the header rows to spread the warp and hemstitched with black wool using the plainweave treadles. I then wove a single pattern repeat (black wool weft) and again hemstitched.

In order to be able to remove the completed sample from the loom, I wove a two-stick header. The fabric was then cut from the loom, gently hand washed in cold water to avoid fulling, hard-pressed on a wool setting and allowed to dry.

The finished fabric is quite soft and crumply – I am very pleased with it. I think that the sett is very satisfactory.there are lines running through it that are parallel to the warp – these must be artifacts from sleying the reed at 4 ends per dent. When I began the weaving, I was beating more gently than when I finished the weaving. As a result, the pattern is more elongated at the beginning than at the end – I prefer the end; there is little difference in texture, but the pattern is more defined and satisfying.
