Warp 34 – 1st piece (the sample) completed

Over the last couple of days, I have woven and finished the sample piece.

I hemstitched on 1,2 in dazzling blue, wove 10 picks 1,2 in dazzling blue, 1st pattern pick in honeysuckle (pink), remainder of a single pattern repeat in scuba blue, a 1 in honeysuckle, 10 picks 2,1 in dazzling blue and hemstitched with dazzling blue on 2,1.

I then wove and glued a stick into the warp so as to lose the least warp when removing the sample from the loom.

Once the flour paste was dry, I cut the fabric from the loom, washed it in the machine on a normal cycle with warm water, trimmed loose ends, rolled it with a lint roller and pressed with a hot iron. The fabric was then hung to dry overnight.

Pre-wash21.5cm x 104cm
Post-wash19.5cm x 99cm

After the completed fabric was dry, I measured a single square of the pattern (bounded by a single line of honeysuckle (pink) and forest green thread). The block is actually square – 14.5cm x 14.5cm at the centre.

It is interesting to compare the fabric structure at the various stages – on the loom, off the loom but pre-wash and post-wash. I have included photos of each stage below. When the fabric is on the loom, it is almost impossible to see the pattern unless you look at an angle from the side. Once the tension is removed (fabric cut from loom), the pattern is quite visible. Washing just brings it out so clearly as the threads move and shrink.

The completed fabric is lovely – soft, drapey, stable. The pattern is just what I wanted. Now I get to weave a whole blanket!
