Lining a wool coat

Several years ago, I purchased a beautiful wool coat. I only realised after wearing it that it wasn’t lined and so wasn’t really cosy on a cold winter day. I had bought some hand dyed, hand woven ikat silk fabric from Uzbekistan and decided that it would perfect to use for lining the coat.

The fabric is a very narrow width, a single width was sufficient for one side of the back of the coat. This meant that I had to use two pieces for the back and another two pieces on the fronts. As the fabric has a strong pattern, I wanted to line the pattern down the centre.

I used my sewing machine to hem the ends of each length of fabric and then hand stitched each piece into place. I didn’t line the sleeves.

I am really pleased with how this coat has turned out and am really looking forward to winter so that I can wear it.
