Warp 29 – Planning & preparation

This is the first warp on my new loom – the 8-shaft, 110cm Louet David III. I’m quite excited about this one! I’m going to weave 8-shaft turned twill with various tie-ups and treadlings. Threading, tie-up and treadlings are taken from Jane Stafford’s School of Weaving Season 5 episode 1 & Season 6 episode 2.

Weave structure – 8-shaft turned twill
Warp – 5/2 mercerised cotton
Weft – 5/2 mercerised cotton (Black will be unmercerised)
Warp length – 3m
Total number of ends – 162
EPI – 15
PPI – 15
Reed – 40/10 metric (that is 40 dents in 10cm or ~10dpi)
Sleying – 1,2 per dent
Width in reed – 10.8 inches
Floating selvedges – Yes

I wound the warp using the warping sequence
49 Fog
16 Black (8/2 mercerised cotton)
32 White
16 Black (8/2 mercerised cotton + 3 ends 5/2 unmercerised as I ran out of 8/2)
49 Fog

The warp was then spread in the raddle at 15epi (3 ends per raddle slot), the heddles threaded (see diagram below), the reed sleyed 1,2 per dent and the warp tied to the front apron bar.
I tied up the shafts to the treadles using tie-up #1 in diagram below and, as this was the first warp on my new loom, I adjusted the beater height to ensure that the warp lay on the shuttle race when the treadles were depressed.
Next I wove the header rows and hemstitched on two picks of fog woven on opposite treadles (1 & 8).

I plan to weave about 10cm of each tie-up/treadling combination from Jane Stafford’s School of Weaving Season 5 episode 1 and Season 6 episode 2; tie-ups and treadling are shown in the diagrams below.
