Warp 18 – All 3 pieces completed – cushions & a bag

After I completed weaving the 3rd piece, I cut the finished fabric from the loom, machine washed with warm water on a normal cycle, cut the pieces apart, trimmed the loose ends, pressed and dried the items.

These three pieces of fabric were then all sewn into their final forms – Pieces 1 & 2 were to be cushion covers and Piece 3 looked like it would make a nice little bag.

Cushion covers

I folded the cream ends over at the fold line, pressed them into place and sewed with a single line of machine-straight stitch.
I was really pleased with the selvedges of these two pieces – the edges of the 8/4 cotton section were lovely and straight and even; the edges of the 16/2 cotton ends were drawn in so that I could fold them over without creating bulky corners.

Then I firmly pinned the hemmed pieces to the cushion covers in preparation for hand-stitching them on.
I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

Small bag

First I plaited a 4-strand cord to be the shoulder-strap – this took quite a while as I wanted it to be long enough to go from one’s hip, over the shoulder and back to the hip.
I pressed folds into the woven fabric at the places that would be the bottom of the bag and the fold for the closing flap.
Then I cut a piece of thin, black fabric to use as a liner for the bag. This was hemmed on all four sides and placed against the woven fabric.
The fabric was folded on the pressed lines and the strap pinned into place along what would be the side seams.
I stitched twice across the plaited strap to hold it in place and then sewed along the sides – this held the lining in place and also from the sides of the bag.
