I stuck the flower patterns onto the castle of the loom, chose colours of rayon yarn to use for the supplementary weft patterns and cut a long length of each colour. Each length of supplementary weft yarn was folded into quarters.
Next I hemstitched with the black rayon weft yarn.
I began to weave. I counted the number of weft picks in the supplementary weft pattern and decided where to place the patterns in the undulation pattern – I decided that at the widest point, they should be two warp ends from the purple stripes and vertically at the widest point of the ondulé “bubble”. This involved counting the number of supplementary weft rows and centring the pattern on the turning point of the purple band on my reed position gauge.
The supplementary weft yarn was attached to the first warp yarn of the pattern with a lark’s head knot. The warp ends for the supplementary pattern were picked up by hand, beaten into place and followed by a pick of ordinary weft yarn. This was repeated for each pattern row until the pattern was complete. The supplementary weft yarn was then knotted to the final warp end of the pattern. The dangling ends were hooked under weft floats with a crochet hook.
I wove a row of four pattern blocks – placed as in the second placement option below, two large and two small flowers.
After this row, I decided to alter the pattern in order to reduce float lengths. The amended pattern can be seen below – white squares are the supplementary weft, black are the warps. I wove a set of four flowers and decided to try different patterns based on those in some textiles from Laos.

It took at least 1.5 hours to weave a set of four patterns across the warp including a plain weave sections between patterns. The final four patterns shown above took over 2 hours to complete!
These patterns were inserted at the top and bottom of the reed position gauge, with the centre of each pattern being at the turning point. They were woven from the bottom up, black squares indicate raised warp ends. All patterns were woven with the wrong side facing me.

Once I finished all of these patterns, I still had a little warp left. I decided to play with varying the number of picks per reed position. When weaving the patterns, I had woven six picks per reed position. For the end of the warp, I wove an up, down, up and down cycle with two picks per reed position. I then tried two picks at each of the purple, green, red, green and purple band (ie every second position). At the top position, I wove 20 picks, then two picks per band back to the centre where I hemstitched.
