Earlier in the year I bought 12 white organic cotton stripe scarves, 6 natural handspun/handwoven cotton scarves & 12 silk scarves from Maiwa.
I decided that it was time to scour them all so that I can start thinking about dyeing them.
The 12 silk scarves weighed 186g. I added 0.5tsp Orvus paste to an ~11l pot of hot water. The scarves were added and were scoured at ~60°C for 1 hour. The water remained quite clear. They were then rinsed and hung to dry.
The 12 white organic cotton scarves were separated into 2 bundles of 6, each weighing 525g. I added 5tsp of soda ash, dissolved this in hot water and added 2.5tsp of synthrapol to each of two ~17l pots of hot water. Six scarves were added to each pot and were scoured at ~80°C for 2 hours. The water was slightly cloudy. They were then rinsed and hung to dry.
The 6 handspun/handwoven cotton scarves weighed 425g. I added 4tsp of soda ash, dissolved this in hot water and added 2tsp of synthrapol to each of two ~17l pots of hot water. The scarves were added and were scoured at ~80°C for 1.5 hours. The water was cloudy and the colour of very weak tea. They were then rinsed and hung to dry.
All scarves have been packed into carefully labelled bags and packed away until I am ready to continue.
