I started by hemstitching with the weft yarn (Bluegrass Mills – Blue salvia) on 2 picks of plain weave (in this case, shafts 1,3,5,7 & 2,4,6,8).
As a single repeat measures ~17cm, I calculated that I would need about 10 pattern repeats plus 0.3 of a repeat (to pick 76; a full repeat = 262 picks) for symmetry to get a good length for a scarf.
I wove 10 repeats, each took about 45 minutes to weave and varied from 16cm to 18.5cm in length.
The piece was finished by hemstitching on a further 2 picks of plain weave.
Repeat number | Repeat length (cm) |
1 | 18 |
2 | 18.5 |
3 | 18 |
4 | 16.5 |
5 | 18.5 |
6 | 16 |
7 | 16.5 |
8 | 17 |
9 | 17 |
10 | 18 |
0.3 of a repeat | 5.5 |
TOTAL | 179.5 |
I estimated that I had about 1.5m of warp left, so I decided to sample a few other colours of 60/2 silk as weft and choose one of these for the warp end piece. I played with the colours using WeaveIT and decided to try red (Bluegrass Mills – tulip), purple (Venne – 9-4024) and magenta (9-3020).
I hemstitched in red and wove ~2cm of each colour and finished by hemstitching in red.
I was so pleased with the iridescence in the red sections, that I hemstitched in red and wove as far as I could using the red yarn. The piece was finished with hemstitching. I was able to weave 6.66 repeats – at the end, I was having to hand manipulate the shafts to increase the shed so that I could throw the shuttle without catching unwanted warp threads.
