I left a 7cm gap after the samples before beginning the first plainweave table napkin – this allows for a 5cm fringe on the napkin.
I threw 2 picks of plainweave with green glow from the right and hemstitched the start of the fabric.
This was followed by another 2 picks of green and then
6.5cm black (15ppi)
4 picks green
6.5cm white (12.5ppi)
4 picks green
6.5cm DLDDL (15.3ppi)
4 picks green
6.5cm DDLL (16ppi)
4 picks green
6.5cm DLDDL (15ppi)
4 picks green
6.5cm white (15ppi)
4 picks green
6.5cm black (16ppi)
4 picks green – the last 2 picks were hemstitched.
I have found that it is hard to work with the black weft on the black warp, although plainweave isn’t as hard as the twill was!
It turns out that 16ppi is actually quite hard to achieve on this 5/2 cotton – it means that I have to beat quite hard.
All through this piece I beat/changed sheds as suggested by Jane Stafford – beat, change shed, push the beater back, throw a pick, beat, change shed, push the beater back. This gives me a lovely straight line of weft thread – I will definitely continue with this method.
I’ve also had a lot of practice at hemstitching now and it’s coming out quite nicely!
