Warp 35 – 1st piece (sample) completed

Over the last few of days, I have woven and finished the sample piece.

I hemstitched in cream and began weaving using the treadling sequence described in an earlier post (TAW threading but with the change in colour sequence – cream/yellow/green/blue/purple).

After weaving up to the large central square, I realised that there was an error in the threading 40-52 threads in from the left hand side of the warp! I had threaded a section using shafts 765476547654 instead of shafts 876587658765!! I decided that the easiest way to correct this error was to slide heddles off the shafts and get the threaded heddles on to the correct shafts, working one shaft at a time. I tied the legs of the heddles with wire bag ties to prevent tangling and to keep them ordered correctly.

Once the error was corrected, I continued weaving until I had completed a whole pattern repetition. I then hemstitched in cream.

In order to safely remove the sample from the loom for wet-finishing, I wove and glued a stick into the warp so as to lose the least warp when removing the sample from the loom.

Once the flour paste was dry, I cut the fabric from the loom, trimmed the loose ends, washed it by hand in cold water, spun in the machine to remove excess water and pressed with an iron on the silk setting. The fabric was then dried flat overnight. In the morning, I worked it in my hands to soften it. It is beautiful – great colours and SO soft and drapey.
