I wove two repeats of the pattern with quite different beating for each (1st repetition = 17.5cm, 2nd repetition = 11.5cm). I like the look of the second one as the pattern is almost square (centre repetition of the piece in the second image gallery below).
I realised that with such a difference in pattern shape, I would have to begin weaving again for the actual piece. Then, I realised that the treadling and threading are incorrect! Neither are mirrored at the centre!! I played with both threading and treadling in WeaveIT and decided not to mess with the threading, but to alter the treadling. As can be seen below, there isn’t actually a whole lot of difference in the pattern.
So, I wove a few tabby picks followed by a single repetition of the pattern with the reversed (corrected) treadling – see top repetition of the piece in the gallery below. This repetition was woven with a very firm beat and ended up being quite square and 11.5cm long. I finished up by hemstitching and weaving a 2-stick header. The sample was removed from the loom and wet finished (hand washed in cold water, loose ends trimmed, hard pressed on wool setting and laid flat to dry).
After feeling all of the repetitions in this 2nd sample, I have decided that I like a medium beat – so an almost square pattern – as the fabric is softer to the touch.
