Project 9 – Winding the warp

I started winding the warp for my woollen wrap project a couple of days ago (12 Sept). This is the first time I’ve used a warping mill instead of a warping board – it’s SO much faster and easier using the mill (many thanks to Cathrine and Peter for an Ashfords gift voucher).

First I measured a 455cm guide thread using hemp twine so that I couldn’t get it mixed up with the warp yarn. I tied this to the starting peg of the cross pegs and wound until I found a good place to put the end peg – this turned out to be about 10cm longer than I had allowed for the warp. So the warps are now about 465cm long.

When winding, I put the warp yarn ball in a bowl at my feet so that it wouldn’t roll around all over the floor was I was winding the warp.
