Photo weaving

The other small pieces I have created for the Christmas Market that we are having at the start of December are woven photos.

I initially experimented with photos of flowers that I had taken and had printed onto 150gsm satin gloss paper. I sliced a piece of 200gsm watercolour paper into 0.5cm strips, leaving a border all around the edges. I then sliced a photo into 0.5cm strips and wove this through the paper. I decided that the white of the paper interrupted the photo too much.

So I looked further through my photos and decided to use some of the many photos of scenery from our area that I have taken.

I edited the colour of several of these and had the original and the altered versions printed onto 150gsm satin gloss paper in both A4 and A5 sizes.

To create the woven image, I sliced an original and an altered colour A4 photo (of the same image – one as warp and the other as weft) into 1cm strips and wove the two photos together – I left a border at the top and bottom of the “warp” photo to give the piece some structure while I was weaving in the weft strips. I tried a few patterns while weaving – all twills.

I decided that I quite liked the results, but that I wanted a more detailed looks, so I sliced the A5 photos into 0.5cm strips and wove these together.

To finish the pieces, I stuck them on black 300gsm card using double sided tape.
